V. D. Rajappan – the king of Malayalam parady is a prominent Kathaprasangam (story telling performance with songs) artist from Kerala. One of the pioneers of mimics and parody of Malayalam all time, 1980s witnessed the glorified period of his career. Rajappan has also appeared in comic and supporting roles in Malayalam cinema during this period. Though the artist owns a glorious past during his youthful days, now he is in extreme financial penury and struggling with diabetes, amnesia and a whole host of diseases. He currently lives with his wife in Peroor, Ettumanoor.

His full name is Velikuzhiyil Devadas Rajappan. He was born in Kottayam to Devadas and Vasanthy. He is married to Sulochana, a nurse by profession. The couple has two sons. He started his career in the 1980s and released his first cassette Chikayunna Sundari. From Chikayunna Sundari to Amittu, his parodies portrayed animals like hen, frog, dog, crow, buffalo etc as characters. It was a time when human characters were widely used. Thus his entry with a new package attracted people quickly.

V. D. Rajappan used to frequently release parody songs and Kathaprasangam cassettes during Onam season and it’s quite nostalgic for listeners of 1980s. He entertained listeners with his comedy and mimics and he made animals as the main characters of his cassettes. It was one of the unique ideas which made him immensely popular. He stopped releasing cassettes with early 2000s, due to health related problems. He was active in film industry for nearly 25 years since early 1980s portraying character roles, mostly comic ones.

In those 42 years, he released 22 parody cassettes which include - Chikayunna Sundari, Pothuputhri, Mak Mak, Akkidi Pakkaran, Priye Ninte Kura, Namukku Parkkan Chandanakadukal, Kumari Eruma, Ennennum Kurangettande, Kidney, Amittu, Avalude Partsukal and many more. Titles of his parody cassettes itself reflected his comic style. Most recently, the artist in the early 60s suffering from ill health was cheated by a private channel which promised 1 Lakh rupees for his treatment, for his appearance in a show. Later he was helped by actor Suresh Gopi.

V. D. Rajappan died on March 24, 2016 in KIMS Hospital, Kottayam.
