Urmila Bhatt Biography

Urmila Bhatt was a noted character artist of Bollywood films. She notably portrayed many memorable mother roles for Hindi cinema since 1960’s. She has also played various roles in Indian television as well as Gujarati and Rajasthani movies. The government of Gujarat has honoured this veteran actress several times for her overall contributions to Indian cinema. She was a noted theater artist too.

Koshish, Gauri, Sunghursh, Dillagi, Badaltey Rishtey, Hamraaz, Kismat, The burning train, Geet Gaata Chal, Ram balram, 36 Ghante, Ankhiyon Ke Jharokhon Se, Geet Gaata Chal, Besharam, Toote Khilone, Hera pheri, Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Do Anjaane, Teesri Aankh, Nikah, Balika Badhu, Dhund, Chori mera kaam, Toofan, Saanch Ko Aanch Nahin, Tarana and Alibaba Marjinaa are her noted roles as a supporting actress. She was active in the industry till mid-1990. This actress from Dehradun passed away on 22 February 1997.

Urmila Bhatt was born in Dehradun in 1934. She started her acting career as a theater artist through Drama Theatre. She was also known as a folk dancer and singer during her younger days. She joined Sangeet Kala Academy in Rajkot in 1960 as a dancer and singer. As a stage actress, Jesal Toral – the Gujarati play was her most successful one. She entered Bollywood in the late 1960’s. Humraaz released in 1967 was her earliest work. Later on, she became one of the prominent character artists of Hindi cinema and she was associated with it for nearly 4 decades.

She was found murdered at her residence in Juhu on February 22, 1997. Her husband was at Baroda and she was alone at home when the house was robbed and she was killed. She was 63 then. Urmila was married to renowned Gujarati stage actor and director, Markand Bhatt who played a significant role in the revival of Gujarati Theatre in the modern times. He passed away on February 5, 2016 after a brief illness.
