Upendra Trivedi Biography

Upendra Trivedi was a famous personality associated with Gujarati cinema. One of the most prolific actors of Gujarati cinema, known by the nickname Abhinay Samrat, he was also known as a film director and producer. He was a theater personality too, known as an accomplished Gujarati stage actor and director. Manvini Bhavai (1993) earned him a National award. Trivedi was successfully paired with actress Snehalatha in many movies. His brother Arvind Trivedi is also an actor who acted in Gujarati and Hindi films and television, best known as ‘Ravana’ of Ramanand sagar’s Ramayana aired on Doordarshan in the 1980s. This legendary artist of Gujarati cinema passed away on 4 January 2015 in Mumbai aged 78. He was actively associated with politics as well.

Upendra Trivedi was born on 14 July 1936 in Indore, MP. But his family originally belongs to Idar, Gujarat. His parents moved to Ujjain during his younger days and he stayed with his elder brother in Mumbai where he did his education. He belonged to a lower class family where his father worked as a mill worker. Following his father’s paralysis, he did many odd jobs to financially support his family. He had three siblings – two brothers and one sister. His younger brother, Arvind Trivedi is a noted actor while his elder brother, Bhalchandra was an educationist.

Since college days at Mumbai he was active in theater plays. He entered film industry in the early 1970s and stayed here for four decades. While at college he did many supporting roles for Gujarati films such as Vanraj Chavdo, Mehndi Rang Lagyo etc to pay fees and daily expenses. Jesal Toral (1971) directed by Ravindra Dave was his first break to films. He played the role of Jadeja in this commercially successful film. As a stage actor, Gujarati play, Abhinay Samrat is one of his noted performance where he played seven roles.
