Umashree Biography

Umashree is a politician as well as an actress of south Indian cinema. She is most known for her comic roles. She has 35 years experience in amateur and professional drama as well and has worked under many leading names of theatre. She has been a Member of the Legislative Council in Karnataka and well known politician. She has acted in more than 400 Kannada movies of which her comic roles are appreciated most. Her noted roles include - Putnanja, Tumbida Mane, Kotreshi Kanasu, Swabimana, Kotigalu Sir Kotigalu, Yaarige Saalutte Sambala, Golmal Radhakrishna, Yaru Hone, Sangolli Rayanna, Sangya balya, Kurigalu Sir Kurigalu, Mani, Veeru, Gulabi Talkies, Kanasemba Kudureyaneri and Bheema Theeradalli. Now she serves as the Women and Child Development, Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens and Kannada & Culture Minister of Karnataka.

Uma has worked in more than 100 plays belonging to different categories and with 35 years experience, has conducted more than 6000 shows as well. Her film career began with the movie, Anubhava opposite Kashinath in 1984. Later on her comic and supporting roles were well appreciated. Her pairing with N. S. Rao was quite popular in those days. After his demise, Uma’s pairing with Mukhyamantri Chandru, Doddanna and Karibasavaiah were also appreciated well by the audience. She played the role of an 80 year old woman in the movie, Puttananja turned out to be the milestone movie of her career. Till then, she was noted most for her comic roles including Muniyamma’s role in Kotigalu Sir Kotigalu. Roles in Tayyavva, Amrutha Ghalige, Sangya Balya etc just followed this role.

Umashree received National award for best actress in the year 2007. She received this award for portraying the role of Gulabi in the movie, Gulabi talkies. She was also nominated for the Best Actress award for Gulabi Talkies at Middle East International Film Festival Abu Dhabi. Uma has also worked in a few television serials like – Musanje, Kicchu and Musanje Katha Prasanga.
