Uma Shankar Mishra Biography

Uma Shankar Mishra is a veteran Indian Politician belonging to Indian national Congress and President-District Congress Committee Raebareli. He is also an Indian Independence Movement Activist. His elder grandson Abhishek Mishra is the Member of Indian Youth Congress and a social activist of Sattva Soul, an NGO. Mishra has carved his name in the history of Raebareli, as a social worker and important congress leader of this constituency. He is regarded as an icon among the younger politicians.

Uma Shankar Mishra belongs to Uttar Pradesh. He actively participated in National Movement in the period, 1946-1947. He started his career as an activist and has been a revolutionary leader active with revolutionary movements and agitations alongside other freedom fighters. He has been associated with Gandhi family, as a part of political movements in the country post Indian independence. He is closely associated and worked for last 4 generations with the family. Mishra actively worked with Feroze Gandhi from 1951 to 1960 and were close companions. In 1966, he along with 5 associates proposed the idea of placing Indira Gandhi as Congress candidate of Raebareli. Indira Gandhi won the 4th Indian general election, 1967 and became Prime Minister of India. She contested from same constituency again in 1971, 1977 and 1980. Mishra has been a senior leader and prominent figure in the high profile Congress campaign in Raebareli and played a significant role in seat wins for Congress during this time.

In 1980, when Indira contested and won from Raebareli and Medak, she left the Raebareli seat. Congress retained its seat in Raebareli and Mishra was instrumental in successful victory of Congress party. Apart from being an active politician, he has also served as Leader of Cooperative movement and revolutionized the Panchayati movement for the district and Vice President of Zila Parishad, Raebareli for over 15 Years.
