Udit Narayan Biography

Udit Narayan is a playback singer and has sung many songs in Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Malyalam, Kannada, Oriya, Assamese, Bengali and Bhojpuri languages. Totally he has sung in 26 different languages. He won National Film Awards three times and Filmfare Awards five times. He was awarded Padma Shri award by the Government of India in the year 2009. His full name is Udit Narayan Jha.

He was born in the year 1955 in a village named Bhardaha in the Saptari district in Nepal. His parents are Hare Krishna Jha and Bhuwaneshwari Devi. He finished his schooling at P. B. School at Rajbiraj and finished his intermediate at Ratna Rajya Laxmi Campus at Kathmandu. He began his career in singing for Radio Nepal and sang Nepali folk songs. He first film debut was in the Nepali film Sindur. He studied the classical music at the Bhartiya Vidya Bhavan in Bombay. He moved to Bombay in 1978.

His successful break was in 1980 for the film Unees Bees. He sang with Lata Mangeshkar for the song Jeevan Ke Din in 1983 for the film Bade Dil Wala. In 1986 he sang the son Krishna Krishna for the film Tan Badan. His success story started in 1988 when he was given an opportunity to sing in the Bollywood movie, Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak by Anand–Milind and this film earned him Filmfare Award. After this he became one of the prominent playback singers of India.

He got married and has one son. He married Deepa Narayan, a singer in 1985 for the second time. His son Aditya Narayan is also a singer. Udit Narayan has worked with several musicians like Rahul Dev Burman, A. R. Rahman, Anand Milind, Jagjit Singh, Anu Malik, Jatin Lalit, Laxmikant – Pyarelal, Kalyanji – Anandji, Bappi Lahiri, Vishal Bhardwaj, Shankar Mahadevan, Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam Chakraborty, Vishal – Shekhar, etc.

Some of the films that he worked include Lagaan, Darr, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, Dil To Pagal Hai, Mohabbatein, Devdas, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Swades, Veer Zaara, etc. He worked with directors like Yash Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Ashutosh Gowariker, Karan Johar, etc. He also acted in two films of Nepali language, Kusume Rumal  and Pirati.
