Udai Singh II Biography

Udai Singh II was the Maharana of Mewar, who founded Udaipur in the present day Rajasthan. This great ruler, along with his descendants is known for his battles against Mughals. The great warrior, Maharana Pratap is his son and Amar Singh I is his grandson, who continued the battles started by him. Amar Singh was born in Chittor on 16 March 1559, exactly the same year when Udai Singh laid the foundation of Udaipur. When Udai Singh II lost his kingdom Chittoor to Akbar, he shifted with his royal family to Udaipur, which was already built years ago. He was the 53rd ruler of the Mewar dynasty who ruled during the period - 1540 - 1572 (32 years).

Udai Singh was born in Chittor on 4 August 1522 to Rana Sanga and his queen Rani Karnavati, a princess of Bundi. After his father’s death, Ratan Singh II was corronated as the new king who was assassinated by his brother Maharana Vikramaditya Singh to take over the power. Turkish invasion occurred during the reign and young Udai was saved by a nurse sacrificing her own son Chandan. She took him to Kumbhalgarh and did not permit him to meet her. Disguised as a nephew of the governor Udai lived in Kumbhalgarh for two years and once he returned, was crowned king by the nobles of Mewar in 1540. His eldest son Maharana Pratap was born the same year.

He had twenty two wives and over 56 sons and 22 daughters. Maharani Jaivanta Bai was his concert, whose son Maharana Pratap succeeded him. But Dheerbai Bhattiyani was his favourite wife. When Chittorgarh Fort was conquered by the Mughal emperor Akbar in 1568, Udai Singh II was forced to leave the palace and he, along with his family resorted to the foothills of the Aravalli Range, where the city of Udaipur was already built in 1559. Before his death in 1572, under the influence of his wife Rani Bhattiyani, his fourth son Jagmal was nominated as his successor. However the nobles of Mewar prevented Jagmal from succeeding and Maharana Pratap was coronated as the new king.
