Trivendra Singh Rawat Biography

Trivendra Singh Rawat is an Indian politician associated with Bharatiya Janata Party. A 3-time MLA from Doiwala assembly seat, he is the eighth and current Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. An RSS 'pracharak' who struck it rich in politics, it is Rawat’s first term as state chief minister. He was also actively involved in the Uttarakhand movement in demand for a separate state, and got arrested several times. He been an RSS activist from 1983 to 2002, held the position of organizing secretary of the Uttarakhand region at first and later the state.

Trivendra Singh Rawat was born in 1960 in Khairasain of Pauri Garhwal, which was previously a part of UP. He was born into a big family of 9 children. He was the ninth and youngest child to his parents. He obtained his master's degree in journalism from Birla Campus in Srinagar. Rawat joined the right-wing organisation Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh in 1979. He became its pracharak for the Dehradun region in 1985. Subsequently, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, and closely worked with the party since then. He later became BJP's organizing secretary for the Uttarakhand region and closely worked with Lalji Tandon. He was arrested several times for his involvement in Uttarakhand movement.

Soon after the state was formed in year 2000, he became state cadre's BJP president. Rawat lost a by-election from Doiwala in 2014, but finally won the same seat in 2017. He had close ties with BJP president Amit Shah and has worked with him in UP before the general elections of 2014. After his party won majority in state elections held in 2017, they formed the government under the leadership of Trivendra Singh Rawat. BJP won a clear majority in the Uttarakhand Assembly elections securing 57 seats while reducing Congress party tally to 11.
