Tripti Mitra Biography

Tripti Mitra was a popular theatre artist and film actress belonging to Bengal. She is the wife of theatre personality - Sombhu Mitra. The couple together founded Bohurupee in 1948. Dharti Ke Lal (1946) marked her big screen debut. Later she acted in movies like Jukti Takko Aar Gappo (1974), Charankabi Mukunda Das (1968), Seba (1967), Kanchanranga (1964), Suryasnan (1962), Manik (1961), The Day Shall Dawn (1959), Shubha Bibaha (1959), Asha (1956), Joy Maa Kali Boarding (1955), Rickshaw-Wala (1955), Moyla Kagaj (1954), Pathik (1953) and Gopinath (1948). Agun, Nabanna, Jabanbandi, Gopinath, Ulukhagra, Chaar Adhyay, Rakta Karabi, Raja, Baki itihaas, Daakghor, Sutorang and Aparajita are her popular plays.

 

Tripti Mitra was born in Dinajpur, Bengal on October 25, 1925. Her maiden name is Tripti Bhaduri. Ashutosh Bhaduri and Shailabala Debi were her parents. Bijon Bhattacharya is her cousin. Her schooling was done at Dinajpur Minor School and later at Pyaricharan School, where she passed matriculation. She got admission in Ashutosh College. But she discontinued her studies soon after getting a job. She married Sombhu Mitra in 1945. Actress and director Shaoli Mitra is their daughter. Since teens Tripti has been active in theatre. She started acting through her cousin Bijon Bhattacharya’s play, Agun in 1943.

 

Bollywood director Khwaja Ahmad Abbas happened to watch her performing in this play and he took her to Mumbai for his upcoming movie – Dharti ke lal. This Hindi movie was based on Bengal famine of 1943 and she played lead role aside Balraj Sahni and Sombhu Mitra in this movie. Her first Bengali film was Pathik in 1953, directed by Debaki Kumar Basu. In association with her husband, she has acted in many plays, notably in their theatre group - Bohurupee. She passed away on 24 May 1989.
