Tony D Souza Biography

Tony D’ Souza is an American writer and journalist, who is to debut Bollywood as a director with the film – Azhar, a biographical sports film based on the life of former Indian cricketer and skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin whose career was lost following match fixing allegations in the year 2000. Known as a novelist of award winning books, Whiteman (2006), The Konkans (2008) and Mule (2011) are his published novels till now. Tony has also established himself as a successful essayist, reviewer, travel and short story writer. He regularly delivers speeches.

 

D'Souza was born and grew up in Chicago. His father is of Indian origin – a Mangalorean Catholic, while his mother, a Euro-American. He graduated from St. Ignatius high school. He completed Master’s Degree in writing from Hollins University and the University of Notre Dame. Then he was associated with Peace Corps in West Africa and Madagascar for three years and worked in rural areas as an AIDS educator. As a writer and columnist, his articles have appeared in The New Yorker, Playboy, Salon, Mother Jones, Esquire, Outside, Granta and many other leading dailies and magazines.

 

His first novel, Whiteman, received the Sue Kaufman Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. His second novel, The Konkans was awarded ‘The best novel of the year’ by the Washington Post, Christian Science Monitor, and Poets & Writers Magazine. He completed the screenplay of Azhar, and the movie is produced by Ekta Kapoor for Balaji Motion Pictures. He has known cricketer Azhar for many years and that proximity has helped him to bag this project. Emraan Hashmi is to play the lead role, while Prachi Desai, Nargis Fakhri, Huma Qureshi and Gautam Gulati appear in the pivot roles.
