Tigmanshu Dhulia Biography

Tigmanshu Dhulia is a successful screenwriter, actor, director and casting director. In 2013, he received National Film Award for Best Feature Film for Paan Singh Tomar. The same movie fetched best screenplay award at Filmfare and SAARC film awards for best director. In 2012, he received best director award at Stardust awards for Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster. As a screenwriter, his noted scripts include – Dil se, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster returns, Paan Singh Tomar, Family: Ties of Blood and Tere mere sapne. As a director, his noted movies are Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and its sequel, Charas, Haasil, Paan Singh Tomar and Shagird.

Dhulia was born and raised in Allahabad, UP. His father was a judge at the Allahabad High Court while his mother was a professor of Sanskrit. He was the youngest of three brothers. He attended St. Joseph's College and Anglo Bengali Intermediate College, then Allahabad University. While at college, he joined the pro-Left Progressive Students’ Organisation. After PG he took a Master's Degree in Theatre at the National School of Drama in New Delhi in 1989.

In 1990, he shifted to Mumbai and started his career as a casting director. He has done a few movies like Bandit queen, Bombay Blues and stiff upper lifts. He appeared in a bit role in 1992 movie, Electric moon. He has also assisted Pradip Krishen in Electric Moon (1992) and Ketan Mehta in Sardar (1993). Then he turned towards television and has directed several television programs, including the six-part Krishna's Dream for UK Channel Four. He has also acted as the writer of a few Doordarshan serials during middle 1990’s.

In 2003, he turned director with Bollywood movie, Haasil. Haasil was nominated for six awards at Zee cine awards and was a critically acclaimed movie too. It was followed by Charas: A Joint Operation, Shagird, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster, Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster returns and Paan Singh Tomar.
