Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan Biography

Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is an active politician belonging to Indian national congress, Kerala who currently serves as a cabinet minister of Oommen Chandry Ministry, Government of Kerala. He formerly served as the Home Minister from 2012 to 2014 and currently holds the Forest, Transport, Sports, Cinema & Environment portfolios. He handed over the charge of home minister to Ramesh Chennithala from 1 January 2014. He is active in state politics since 1991 and has been elected to Kerala state legislative assembly 5 times consecutively. Except for 2011 Assembly elections, he was elected from Adoor constituency. In 2011 he won from Kottayam with a narrow margin of just 711 votes.

He was born in Thiruvanchoor, Kottayam in 1949. He holds B.A and Bachelor of Law degrees. Thiruvanchoor entered public service as a student activist in the early 1960s. He was associated with political organizations like KSU and Youth Congress during his young days and has been elected as students’ leader. Later he held many decorative positions of KSU, Youth Congress and KPCC. He was elected to Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1991, 1996, 2001 and 2006 from Adoor and in 2011 from Kottayam Constituency, where he serves as an MLA right now.

He has served as the cabinet minister of present and previous UDF governments, both headed by Oomen Chandy. Under UDF Government 2004 – 2006, he held different portfolios like Irrigation & Water Resources, Forest, Health and Parliamentary Affairs. In the current UDF government, he formerly served as Home Minister and Minister of Revenue and currently serves as Minister for Forests, Sports, Cinema, Road Transport and Environment since January 2014.
