Thikkodiyan Biography

Thikkodiyan was a noted personality of Malayalam literature. His works include novels, playwrights and poems. He has also penned lyrics for Malayalam films. He was born in Thikkodi, a small village in Kozhikode district. He has also served as a producer at All India Radio. Arangu Kaanatha Nadan is his autobiography which captures social and cultural development of Malabar region of Kerala post independence. This work won him Kendra Sahithya Academy Award and Vayalar award in the year 1995. He held good association with noted Malayalam writers like S. K. Pottekkat, Uroob, N. V. Krishna Warrier and M. V. Devan.

 

Thikkodiyan was born in Thikkodi, a small village in Kozhikode district, Kerala to M. Kunjappa Nair and P. Narayani Amma. His real name is P. Kunhananandan Nair. He lost his parents at a younger age and he was brought up by his grandfather. His grandfather was a great lover of theatre and it made THikkodiyan love theatre and the piece of art. His school education was done at Basel Mission Middle School, Quilandy. He later completed teachers training course and returned to his school as teacher in the year 1936. Private schoolteachers were a neglected lot in British Malabar and when young Thikkodiyan protested against this injustice, he was expelled from the school. He later became a full time member of social service and joined Bharat Seva Sangham and worked for Nayanar Balika Sadanam, an orphanage in Kozhikode till his death.

 

He worked as editor of the Malayalam daily newspaper, Dinaprabha for a short period and later joined All India Radio in the year 1950 as a script writer and later became its producer. He retired in the year 1979. He got married in the year 1942. But his wife died in 1949. As a writer, he started using pen name Anand. He was rechristened Thikkodiyan by noted Malayalam writer, Sanjayan. A few of his noted works include - Pazhassiyude Padavaal, Puthuppanam Kotta, Puthuppanam Kotta, Kanyadanam, Prethalokam, Kannaadi and Nirahara Samaram.
