Thagubothu Ramesh, the screen name of Ramesh Ramilla is a popular comedian and character artist associated with Telugu cinema. He excelled in playing the roles of drunkard on silver screen, for which Thagubothu tag got permanently added to his name. He is inspired by Bengali comedian Keshto Mukherjee for doing drunkard roles. Mahatma, Ala Modalaindi, Pilla Zamindar and Ishq are among his memorable roles which brought him to prominence.

Ramesh Ramilla is his birth name. He is a native of Godavarikhani of Karimnagar district, present day Telangana. His father worked at Singareni Collieries Company. Ramesh expresses his bitter memories of childhood days when his father used to come home as a drunkard and beat his mother. He used to comfort his mother, by imitating his father as a drunkard to bring a smile on his mother’s face. Later Ramesh became a mimicry artist and excelled in the roles of drunkard, which can be regarded as his masterpiece. As a mimicry artist he started performing in his hometown and later at many shows. He also worked as a building supervisor for 10 years. It was after his parents’ death he pursued a career in cinema.

Ramesh joined the Akkineni Film Institute in Hyderabad after the death of his parents’ and sister’s marriage. Sukumar’s Jagadam was his first break to movies. After doing around 10 films, he got his big break as a drunkard through Mahatma. He got this role through one of his acquaintances, popular Telugu actor Uttej. Very soon he bagged the role of a software engineer drunkard in Ala Modalaindi, which was his major breakthrough. Since then Ramesh established himself as the leading ‘Drunkard’ of Telugu screen. Nannaku Prematho, Kumari 21F, Surya vs Surya and Saheba Subramanyam are among his recent releases.
