Telangana Shakuntala Biography

Telangana Shakuntala was a popular Telugu actress who played lead heroine in numerous movies.  Osey Ramulamma, Nuvvu Nenu, Lakshmi, Okkadu and Veede are her most memorable performances. She has been associated with television and a few Tamil movies as well.  She bagged Best Actress Nandi Award for the year 1980 for the movie Kukka. She is originally a Maharastrian though a part of south Indian film industry. She was equally verse in Telangana and Rayalaseema accents. Her slang and punch dialogues took a remarkable fame in Telugu film industry and it was bit shock to the film industry when she died of a cardiac arrest in Hyderabad on June 14, 2014. She had just celebrated her 63rd birthday 5 days before. In the last one year Telugu film industry witnessed the unexpected deaths of many well-known celebrities like Darmavarapu Subbaramanyam, AVS, Srihari and Uday Kiran.  

 

She was born on 9 June 1951, as one among the four sisters of the family. Her father was an Army Officer and her mother a housewife. She started her acting career as a stage actress as a part of Ravindra Bharathi.  1979 Telugu film Maa Bhoomi marked her big screen debut. The role was offered to her by Goutam Ghose. It was Teja’s blockbuster Nuvvu Nenu that shot Shakuntala into limelight. Later she became one of the popular heroines of the industry though moved to character roles. As a character artist too, she was immensely popular.

 

She has acted in 74 movies and Pandavulu Pandavulu Tummeda was her last film released in 2014. She is best known for popularizing Telangana accent in her comic and villain roles. She also worked in Tamil films such as Dhool and Machak Kaalaia.
