Tej Bahadur Sapru Biography 
Tej Bahadur Sapru was an Indian political leader and an eminent lawyer at the time of British rule in India. He was born on 8th December 1875 in Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh in a Kashmiri Hindu family. He studied at the Agra College. He was the cousin of the poet and philosopher Allama Iqbal.
His parents are Ambika Prasad Sapru and Gaura Hukku. He had three sons Prakash Narain, Trijugi Narain and Anand Narain and two daughters Jagdembashwari and Bhuvaneshwari. Jagdish Narain Sapru the former chairman of ITC Limited is his grandson.
He started his career in the High Court of Allahabad as a lawyer. He was one of the best lawyers of the time. He was the leader of the Indian Liberal Party. He sought self-government and not independence from British Empire. He and M. R. Jayakar had frequent discussions with the British and participated in the provincial and central legislatures.
He advocated the moderate policies of Gopal Krishna Gokhale and criticized the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and his Non-cooperation movement and Salt Satyagraha. However he acted as a mediator in the Gandhi – Irwin pact that brought Salt Satyagraha to an end. His Liberal Party did not contribute much and remained a small club of intellectuals.
He was a member of Union Provinces Legislative Council from 1913 to 1916, member of Imperial Legislative Council from 1916 to 1920 and the law member of the Viceroy’s Council from 1920 to 1923. He took part in the Indian Round Table Conferences from 1931 to 1933 and served as the member of the Privy Council in 1934.
He supported Britain in the World War II. He was against capturing the soldiers of the Indian National Army. He was unpopular due to his pro-British opposition. He died on 20th January 1949 in Allahabad.
