Tarun Gogoi Biography

Tarun Gogoi is the Chief Minister of Assam since 2001 and on 18 May 2013, he completed 12 consecutive years as Chief Minister of Assam. He is a member of the Indian National Congress and has led congress win successively for the past three terms in Assam. He is a dynamic leader whose leadership paved way to rapid development of the state in any matters. Gogoi has also served 6 terms as a Member of Parliament from the Lok Sabha. He first represented Jorhat during the long term of 1971–85 followed by Kaliabor in 1991–96 and 1998–2002. Tarun Gogoi is married to Dolly Gogoi, a post-graduate in Zoology from Guwahati University. The couple has two children – a son and a daughter.

 
Gogoi was born on 1 April 1936 at Rangajan Tea Estate, erstwhile Sivasagar District of present Assam. His father, Dr Kamaleshwar Gogoi was a medical practitioner at Rangajan Tea Estate. His mother Usha Gogoi is the younger sister of the renowned Assamese poet, Ganesh Gogoi. He was fondly called by the pet name Punakon by his parents in his childhood. His primary education was done at the No.26 Rangajan Nimna Buniyadi Vidyalaya. Later he completed schooling from Jorhat Madrassa School and Bholaguri High School near Badulipar Tea Estate. He passed his matriculation from Jorhat Government High School in 1951. He graduated from J. B. College, Jorhat and Gauhati University where he took a BA and LLB degrees respectively. He married Dolly Gogoi on 30 July, 1972.


In 1968, he became a Member of Municipal Board, Jorhat and in 1971, he was elected to 5th Lok Sabha. In 1976 he became Joint Secretary of All India Congress Committee. Later he got reselected in 6th and 7th Lok Sabha elections too. He became Union Minister of State in the Food and Food Processing Industry departments (1991–96) under P. V. Narasimha Rao. President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) in 1986–90 and 1996 are other top positions held by Gogoi.
