Tapas Paul Biography

Tapas Paul – a two term MP is an Indian politician from Bengal belonging to Mamta banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. Currently he serves as a member of parliament and got elected in 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Krishnanagar. He was earlier elected from same constituency for 2009 Lok sabha elections. Earlier Paul has been a popular actor on Bengali screen since 1980 and received a Filmfare Award for his role in Saheb. Bhalobasha Bhalobasha and Guru Dakshina are his other noted roles. On June 30, 2014 he drew nationwide attention following a statement against women politicians belonging to Communist party. His shocking comment that he would send "our boys to rape CPM women if necessary, created protests nationwide and one day later his wife, Nandini Pal, a television artist apologized on her husband’s statement.

He was born in Bengal in 1958. He completed graduation in Bio-Science from Hooghly Mohsin College. He debut silver screen in the year 1980 with the movie, Dadar Kirti, directed by Tarun Majumder. In this movie he played lead aside Mahua Roychoudhury, and the movie also included artists - Debasree Roy, Ayan Banerjee and Sandhya Roy. Its music was popular and the movie was a hit, establishing him as a successful actor. He was regularly paired with top actress Debasree Roy with numerous movies including his debut movie, followed by Samapti, Chhokher Aloy, Parabat Priya, Bhalobasha Bhalobasha, Surer Akashe etc. He played lead roles for more than a decade and later moved to character roles.

He is also remembered as the first hero of Madhuri Dixit. She made her screen debut with Abhodh in 1984, in which the lead role of a wedding photographer was played by Tapas. At present he is a seasonal actor and spares more time for politics and social service than movies.
