T. S. Kalyanaraman Biography 
T. S. Kalyanaraman is a businessman, entrepreneur, the Chairman & Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers and Kalyan Developers, owned by Kalyan Group, Thrissur. In the recent times, under his leadership Kalyan Jewellers has witnessed an explosive growth and has opened many new shops in India and abroad. The first shop was opened in Thrissur main town in 1993 by Kalyanaraman and named it ‘Kalyan Jewellers’ with a capital of 7.5 million Indian rupees. The chain has grown to 79 showrooms across India and GCC with a valued asset of about $1 billion in January, 2013. Kalyan group has its headquarters at Thrissur, Kerala.
The group was started in 1909 by Kalyanaraman’s grandfather T S Kalyanrama Iyer, a priest from Kumbakonam who turned into an entrepreneur. Later the business was taken over by his son Seetharamaiyer. He partitioned the businesses to five sons in 1991 and T. S. Kalyanaraman, one among his sons started Kalyan Jewellers in 1993. Kalyan Silks, Kalyan Developers, Kalyan Sarees and Kalyan Collections are other major brands associated with the group. Kalyanaraman’s brother T. S. Pattabhiraman is the Chairman and Managing Director of Kalyan Silks which now owns 21 showrooms across south India.
T. S. Kalyanaraman was born in Thrissur main town in the year 1951. He had 4 brothers. He learnt the essence of business from his father who set up the Kalyan Group. He joined father’s business at the age of 12 to study business from his textile shop. He completed his studies in commerce from Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur. When the Kalyan Empire was split among the 5 sons by Seetharamaiyer in 1991, T. S. Kalyanaraman took over the jewellery segment while his brother T. S. Pattabhiraman took over the textile segment.
At present Kalyan Jewellers is the largest jewellery chain in India with a turnover of Rs 8,500 crore per year, indeed a unique achievement from an entrepreneur belonging to a town from the remote state of India, Kerala. Now leading cine artists like Aishwarya Rai and Amitabh Bachchan endorse for this brand, which has helped a lot in developing a good brand value for Kalyana Jewellers.
