T. R. Rajakumari Biography

T. R. Rajakumari was a Tamil film actress, Carnatic singer and dancer who has been given the title of "dream girl" of Tamil cinema for the first time. She played lead role to many lead actors of yesterdays like - Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, T. R. Mahalingam, K. R. Ramaswamy, P. U. Chinnappa, M. G. Ramachandran and Sivaji Ganesan. She also started a film production company alongside her brother T. R. Ramanna called "R. R. Pictures" and has produced several Tamil hits. As an actress, her last movie was Vaanampadi released in 1963. She played the role of Chandramukhi in 1936 Hindi movie – Devdas.

 

Her full name is Thanjavur Ranganayaki Rajayee and popularly known by her screen name T. R. Rajakumari. Rajayee was born in 1922 in a family of carnatic musicians. Both her mother and her grandmother were Carnatic music experts. Rajayee made her film debut as "T. R. Rajakumari" in the 1939 Tamil film Kumara Kulothungan. The movie was an average hit. Her second film Kacha Devayani (1941) was a commercial hit and established Rajakumari as a successful heroine of Tamil film industry. Haridas alongside M. K. Thyagaraja Bhagavathar, witnessed her new avatar as a glamor doll and was a huge hit at box office too.

 

Kumara Kulothungan, Haridas, Raja kumari, Manohara, Kacha Devayani, Manonmani, Sivakavi, Chandralekha, Amarakavi and Kumara Kulothungan are her movies as an actress. Later she turned a film producer and has produced several movies under the banner "R. R. Pictures". Movies under this banner include - Vaazhapirandhavan (1953), Koondukkili (1954), Gul-E-Bagaavali (1955), Paasam (1962), Periya Idathu Penn (1963), Panam Padaithavan (1965) and Parakkum Paavai (1966). She died on September 20, 1999 after a prolonged illness.
