T. R. Baalu Biography

T. R. Baalu is a veteran politician and parliamentarian from Tamil Nadu. He belongs to Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), a political party of Tamil Nadu. As an important leader of the party, he is known for the political loyalty since 1957. He represents Sriperumbudur constituency since 2009 and has earlier served as MP from Chennai South (1996-2009). He has been a member of Rajya Sabha representing Tamil Nadu from 1986 to 1992. It was for the first time he got elected to parliament. In his long political career, he has been jailed more than 20 terms for his participation in several agitations and demonstrations for public cause. Baalu has two wives, Renuka Devi and Porkodi.

 

Baalu was born on 15 June 1941, Thalikottai in Thiruvarur District. He took Diploma in Engineering from Central Polytechnic in Chennai before completing graduation and got involved with politics since his college days. He joined DMK at the age of 16 and till now, he remains loyal to the party. He was elected as the Secretary of the party of Chennai Unit in 1982. He became a member of Rajya Sabha in 1986 and got elected to Lok Sabha in the year 1996, where he served as Minister of State in the Ministry Petroleum and Natural Gas. Later he was given an additional charge of Non-conventional Energy Sources. He was elected from Chennai constituency.

 

Baalu got reelected to Lok Sabha in 1998, 1999 and 2004 from Chennai constituency and in 2009 he got elected from Sriperumbudur constituency. During his tenure as MP he has served as Cabinet Minister of Environment and Forests and Minister of Shipping and Road Transport and Highways. His second son T. R. B. Rajaa is the current MLA from Mannargudi constituency.
