T. Padmanabhan Biography

T. Padmanabhan is the short name of Thinakkal Padmanabhan, a noted writer of Malayalam. He is a famous short story writer from Kannur. Among his published 170 stories, Prakasam Parathunna Oru Penkutty, Oru Kathakrithu Kurishil, Makhan Singhinte Maranam, Gouri and Oru Kathakrithu Kurishil are his major works. A few of his works have been made feature films and dance ballets. His major works have been translated to almost all Indian languages and a few foreign languages. Though he has been awarded with Odakkuzhal Award in 1995 for Kadal, Kendra Sahitya Academy Award for Gowry in 1996 and Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Saakshi in 1973, he rejected all these awards! Vayalar Award in 2000, Vallathol Award in 2001 and Ezhuthachan Award in 2003 are major awards accepted by him.

 

He was born in 1931 in Kannur, Kerala. After studies, he joined Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT), Aluva where he worked for many years. In parallel he continued his literal career as well. He retired as the Deputy General Manager in 1989. Throughout years, though he has received many awards, he has a usual habit of declining them. He started writing in the early 1950’s and ‘Prakasam Parathunna Oru Penkutty’ was his first major work published in 1955.

 

It was followed by Oru Kathakrithu Kurishil (1956), Makhan Singhinte Maranam (1958), T. Padmanabhante Thiranjedutha Kathakal (1971), Saakshi (1973), Harison Sayvinte Naaya (1979), Veedu Nashtappetta Kutty (1983), Kalabhairavan (1986), Nalinakanthi (1988), Gowry (1991), Kadal (1994) and Padmanabhante Kathakal (1995). His award winning novel Gouri was presented as a musical program by Doordarshan Malayalam in the year 1992, titled Saptha Swarangal.
