T. M. Abraham Biography

T. M. Abraham is a Malayalam theatre director and playwright. He has served as the Vice Chairman of the Kerala Sangeetha Nadaka Academy during 2001–2004. Though his works are mostly plays, he has also published a couple of novels – Ulpatthi and Shantigiri. Abraham has published 14 books in Malayalam in various categories. His works also include a few translations. In 1981 he won Kerala Sahitya Akademy Award for the play collection Perunthachan. He has also been nominated as a member to Kerala Sahitya Akademi and Kerala Kalamandalam. He is an executive member of the Samasta Kerala Sahitya Parishad. Currently he is the Secretary of Cochin Theatre Group.

 

Abraham was born at Neyyassery village in Thodupuzha as the second son of Ouseph Mathew Thottathimyalil and Aleykutty Mathew. He has 10 siblings. His schooling was completed from St. Sebastian School, Neyyassery, Thodupuzha and graduation from University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. He also holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Public Relations. After education, he joined FACT as a chemist at the age of 21. He retired in 2004 as the Manager of Public Relations. As a play director, a few of his works include – Perunthachan, Pravukal Ippol Karayunnilla, Swapana Bhavanam and The Queen and the Rebels.

 

He is a renowned playwright known for his one-act plays – Rakthabali, Perunthachan, Pravukal Ippol Karayunnila, Keeri Muricha Kannu, Kozhutha Kalakutty, Nashtapetta Chirakukal and Athbuthanganam. His drama works are Nizhal koodaram and Ekakikaluda Thazhvara. His one act play, Rakthabali has been translated to Bengali language and was published in special issue of the Bengali Theatre Journal ‘Shoodrak’ in the year 2000. Apart from playwrights, he has also authored a couple of theater works - Abhinaya Paatangal and Theatre Games Kuttikalkku. His translation works include – Vadhu, Jesus CEO, The Path, Yesukristhuvinte Suvishesham and Caligula. He has also written a monograph on Malayalam playwright N. N. Pillai.
