Syed Mujtaba Ali Biography

Syed Mujtaba Ali was a famous Bengali writer. He was also known as a scholar, linguistic and journalist. He was the recipient of the second Ananda Puraskar in the year 1959. The award was first received by Bibhutibhushan Mukhopadhyay in 1958. Ali was awarded the prestigious Narasinghe Das prize in 1949. A great scholar and linguistic, he knew 15 languages. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2005 by the Government of Bangladesh. Ali lived his last years in Bangladesh after partition. Extracts from his literary works are included in the academy syllabus of schools and colleges. He died on 11 February 1974 aged 69. Ali was a satirist, a romantic, a linguist, and a great storyteller, and also known as a language movement activist.

 

Ali was born in Karimganj district of Bengal Presidency. His father was a sub-register. Ali had two elder brothers. His elder brother Syed Murtaza Ali was a Bangladeshi writer and historian. Ali completed his graduation from Visva-Bharati University in Santiniketan in 1926. He was among the first graduates of the university. Later he started his professional career as a lecturer and worked in many educational institutions. He earned his PhD from University of Bonn in 1932 and after that moved to India and taught at various colleges.

 

Deshe Bideshe (1949) was his first published book which was adjusted as the best book of the year. It was a summary of his experiences in Kabul. Since then he authored several books such as Panchatantra, Dandya Madhur, Obishashsho, Shabnam, Sreshtho Golpo, Chacha Kahini, Mayurkanthi, Kotona Asrujal, Musafir, Duhara etc. After the liberation of Bangladesh he returned to the new country. He passed away in 1974.
