Syed Hasan Imam Biography

Syed Hasan Imam is an Indian politician in the pre-independent era who served as the President of the Indian National Congress. He was a leading Barrister and Judge of Calcutta High Court in the early 1900s. Padma Shri recipient Bulu Imam, an environmentalist best known for his work towards the protection and conservation of tribal culture and heritage in Jharkhand is his grandson. Syed Hasan Imam served as the Barrister and Judge of Calcutta High Court (1912–1916), and the President of the Indian National Congress in Bombay Session, year 1918, the fourth Muslim to serve this position.

 

Syed Hasan Imam was born on 31 August 1871 in Neora, Patna as the son of lmdad Imam. He was the younger brother of Sir Ali Imam. He belonged to a distinguished and well-eduacted family of Patna. He was frequently ill during his school days, and later he moved to England in July 1889 and joined the Middle Temple. He got into politics by then, and also campaigned for Dadabhai Naoroji during the General Election of England in 1891. He was called to the Bar in 1892. Once he returned back to India, he started practising law Calcutta High Court and later became a Judge.

 

After the establishment of the Patna High Court in 1916, he moved back to his hometown and started law practice at Patna, fresh from the beginning. Since 1908 he was active in politics and was elected President of the Bihar Congress Committee the following year. In year 1921 he was nominated a Member of the Bihar and Orissa Legislative Council. A staunch constitutionalist he was opposed to the ideology of the Non-cooperation movement, and he took a leading part in the Khilafat Movement and Civil Disobedience Movement in 1930.
