Syed Akbaruddin Biography

Syed Akbaruddin is the incumbent official spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India since 2011. He also heads the External Publicity and Public Diplomacy division of the Ministry of External Affairs in capacity of Join Secretary.

Personal LifeHe is the son of late Prof. S. Bashiruddin, the Head of the Dept. of Journalism and Communication, Osmania University, who headed the Department for many years also served as Indian Ambassador to Qatar, Vice-Chancellor, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Open University and Director of the Research Wing of the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and Dr. Zeba Bashiruddin who was a member of the English Department, Sri Sathya Sai University.

CareerSyed Akbaruddin is a 1985 batch civil servant. At the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna, he was on deputation for four years and returned to India in 2011. He is considered "expert" on the West Asia issues in India and has served in various capacities in that region including consul general at Jeddah from 2000 to 2004. He was the director at Foreign Secretary's Office of the Ministry from 2004 to 2005.

Syed Akbaruddin, a senior diplomat who has served in key capitals, he is currently spokesperson of India's external affairs ministry. Akbaruddin succeeded Vishnu Prakash, who was named as India's ambassador to South Korea. Akbaruddin's appointment has not been formally announced, but an order to that effect was issued. 

A 1985 batch Indian Foreign Service Officer, Akbaruddin has a varied resume that includes stints as consul general in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia and joint secretary (administration) in the external affairs ministry.

Syed Akbaruddin has served in India's permanent mission in New York and in Indian missions in Cairo, Riyadh and Islamabad in 2006, he was sent on deputation to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency. Incidentally 8 April will be his last day in the capacity of spokesperson of India's external affairs ministry.
