Swapan Guha Biography

Swapan Guha is an entrepreneur and businessman from Kolkata, best known as an expertise in ceramic industry in India. Currently he is a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Ceramics. A recipient of many honours including Madan Gopal Bhagat Award of the All India Potter Manufacturer's Association (1998) and Prof. Sasadhar Roy Memorial Award of the Indian Ceramic Society (1999), Indian government honoured him with Padma Shri in 2012 for his experience and excellence in the field ceramic industry in the country. He established a bone china unit at Bharat Potteries Limited in Jaipur which later developed into a major industry and also founded Hopewell Ceramics in Jaipur.

 

Swapan Guha was born in 1957 in Kolkata. After graduation he started his career in government service. He joined as a Research and Development Officer at Kerala Ceramics Limited in the late 1970s. Later he worked with Bharat Potteries Limited, Jaipur as a Technical Advisor since 1988. During this time he introduced Bone China to their product range. Later he worked as General Manager of NCL Industries, and then commissioned a bone china unit, Bharat Potteries Limited, in Jaipur. It became a major success and Swapan did the roles of chief executive and director.

 

Very soon he started his entrepreneurship by founding Hopewell Ceramics in Jaipur in 2002 and started Nagarjuna Cerachem and Kalpataru Ceraware also. He employed 1200 people and very soon he developed it into a successful company. He also served as the President of Indian Ceramic Society and is known for his outstanding contributions to the field of Indian ceramics. Within the 30 years of his illustrious career, Guha has reached the pinnacle of success. He is the first person in the Ceramic & Glass industry to achieve an Indian civilian honour.
