Swaminathan Aiyar Biography

Swaminathan Aiyar is a prominent journalist and columnist. He is consulting editor for the Economic Times and popular columnist of the Economic Times and The Times of India. He is also a Research Fellow at the Cato Institute, Washington DC. His elder brother, Mani Shankar Aiyar is an active politician of Indian national congress and has served as the cabinet minister of Manmohan Singh. Towards Globalisation (1992) and Swaminomics: Escape from the Benevolent Zookepers (2008) are his published works. Now he is known by the name, Swaminathan S. Anklesaria Aiyar and the middle name is taken from his present wife’s name. He did so to create equality between spouses and to break the normal procedure of adding husband’s name to wife’s, soon after marriage. He was earlier married to Gitanjali Aiyar, famous news reader and star anchor of Doordarshan during 1980’s.

 

Aiyar was born to V. Shankar Aiyar, a chartered accountant and Bhagyalakshmi Shankar on 12, October, 1942 in Akola, Maharashtra. His father died in an air crash when he was young. He did his schooling from Welham Boys' School, The Doon School and got graduation degree from St. Stephen's College, Delhi. . His mother taught at school in negotiation for his school fees, following his father’s death. After graduation he earned a master's degree in economics from Magdalen College, Oxford.

 

He has a bright career as a journalist. He served as the editor of The Economic Times (1992–94), Financial Express (1988–90) and Eastern Economist (1980–82). He is also a research fellow at the Cato Institute, Washington DC, and an occasional consultant to the World Bank. He is currently consulting editor of The Economic Times. Among his 3 children, Pallavi Aiyar (from the first marriage) is a noted journalist.
