Susarla Dakshinamurthi Biography

Susarla Dakshinamurthi was an eminent carnatic musician and music director of south Indian film industry. He was also known as a playback singer and film producer. Shrimad Virat Veerabrahmendra Swami Charitra (1984), Shri Lakshmamma Katha (1950), Sarvadhikari (1951), Santanam (1955), Narthanasala (1963), Shrimad Virata Parvam (1983), Ilavelpu (1956), Veera Kankanam (1957), Annapurna (1959), Paramanandayya Shishyula Katha (1950),  Krishna Leelalu (1959) and Samsaram (1950) are his notable films as a music director. As a film producer, he has made two movies - Mohini Rukmangada (1960) and Rama Sundari (1962). But both these movies were commercial failures.

 

He was born on 11 November 1921 in Pedakallepalli, Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. Annapurnamma and Susarla Krishnabrahma Sastry were his parents. His father was a music scholar and teacher. His paternal grandfather was Susarla Dakshinamurthi Sastri, a doyen of Carnatic music. Students used to come to his home from long distance to learn music from his grandfather and his home used to feed them. Dakshinamurthi was a child prodigy, who played the violin at the age of 9 during the 9 day Navarathri Celebration at Machilipatnam. He has worked as Harmonium player in His Master's Voice in 1938. He was an A-Grade artist of All India Radio since 1930’s. He was invited to New Delhi station as Director for South Indian music.

 

But later he moved to Chennai where he worked as assistant to music director, C. R. Subburaman. Later he became an independent music director of the industry and was equally successful as a playback singer. He developed Diabetes Mellitus and lost vision in one eye in 1972 and the other in 1987. Murthy died at his residence in Chennai on 9 Feb 2012 aged 90.
