Surinder Kapoor Biography

Surinder Kapoor was a film producer of Hindi cinema. He has directed a few movies as well. His sons are Boney Kapoor – Producer and director of Bollywood movies, Anil Kapoor and Sanjeev Kapoor, actors of Bollywood. Sonam Kapoor is the granddaughter of Surinder Kapoor. Surinder Kapoor has one more daughter Reena and she is married to Sandeep Marwah of Marwah Films & Video Studios. Apart from producing films, Surinder Kapoor has also served as the President of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India from 1995 to 2001. He was born in Peshawar, British India and belonged to a distinguished Hindu Pathan family. He started his career as an assistant director during 1950’s and for the historical movie, Mughal-E-Azam, he has worked as assistant director too.  

 

He has produced many movies in which his son Anil Kapoor has acted. A few of such movies include – Pukar, Hum aapke dil mein rehte hain, No entry, Judai, Loafer and Woh saat din and all these movies were successful at box office also. Pukar helped Anil Kapoor to earn a National award for best actor and earned him a Filmfare nomination also. Among his directorial ventures, Bhooka sher was released in the year 2001. He was its producer also. Bhooka sher starred Hemant Birje, Dharmendra, Kiran Kumar and R.M. Mishra in the leading roles.

 

His other production ventures include - Thanedarni, Poona Pandit, Ek Shriman Ek Shrimati, Tarzan Comes to Delhi, Shehzaade and Hum paanch. Most recently he has produced the movie Milenge Milenge starring Shahid Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor in the leading roles and this movie was inspired by Madhavan starrer Tamil movie, Jay Jay. However this movie released in the year 2010 couldn’t repeat the success of Jab we met and this dragged project bombed at box office terribly.

 

He started his film career as a secretary to Bollywood star of 1950s Geeta Bali. Later he became an assistant director working for a few films including Mughal-E-Azam. Dada Saheb Phalke Academy honoured this veteran producer with the L.V. Prasad Phalke Award in 2009, for his contributions to Hindi film industry. He died on on 24 September 2011 following a cardiac arrest.
