Suresh Dalal Biography

Suresh Parshottamdas Dalal, shortly called Suresh Dalal was a noted writer and a popular poet from Gujarati literature. A recipient of Sahitya Academy award for the year 2005, he won the award for Gujarati language for his poem Akhand Zalar Vage. He was also known as an essayist and editor of Gujarati literature. He passed away on August 10, 2012 after a heart attack aged 79. He was also an eminent professor in Gujarati language who served as the Vice-chancellor at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda. He was a recipient of Gujarat Government Award 5 times, apart from many other honours.

 

Suresh Parshottamdas Dalal was born on October 11, 1932 in Thane, Maharashtra. He completed graduation in Gujarati in 1953, followed by Master’s in 1955 and Ph.D. in 1969. After that he started his academic career and has taught Gujarati at different colleges in the state. Dalal taught Gujarati literature at Shrimati Nathibai Damodar Thackersey University. He served as the Head of the Gujarati Department at SNDT Women's University, Vice-chancellor at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and a "National Lecturer" for the UGC.

 

Suresh Dalal has also served many elite positions such as an Advisory Board member at Gujarati Sahitya Academy from 1983 to 1987 and served as the editor of many literary magazines such as Kavitha and Vivecana. Kavitha was a bimonthly journal in which works were included of Gujaratis and Marathis. As a renowned poet some of his noted works include - Astitva, Naam Lakhi Dau, Ekant, Ghatana, Symphony, Skyscraper, Tarikh nu Ghar, Hastakshar, Ek Anami Nadi etc. He also introduced Gujarati readers to poets writing in other languages, through his translation works. His works were active in Mumbai where he lived, and made easy access of Gujarati literature to Gujaratis living there. Jagdish Joshi, Vipin Parikh and Harindra Dave were his best friends.
