Surendranath Dasgupta Biography 
Surendranath Dasgupta was a noted philosopher and scholar from Bengal who lived in the early half of 20th century. Born in Kushtia, Nadia of British India in 1887, he has given significant contributions to the world of Indian philosophy. Many of his works have been published in volumes. A History of Indian Philosophy (5 volumes), Rabindranath: The Poet and Philosopher, A History of Sanskrit Literature, Kavyavicha, Saundaryatattva, Yoga Philosophy in Relation to Other Systems of Indian Thought, A Study of Patanjali, General Introduction to Tantra Philosophy, Hindu Mysticism and Rabidipika are among his selected works. In 1932, he served as President of the Indian Philosophical Congress.
Dasgupta was born in Kushtia of West Bengal, now a part of Bangladesh. He graduated with honours in Sanskrit from Ripon College, Kolkata and took double Masters in Sanskrit and Western Philosophy too. He got married to younger sister of Himanshu Rai, founder of Bombay Talkies. Her name is Himani Devi and the couple had 6 children. Among the three daughters, Maitreyi Devi is a noted poet and novelist. His daughter Chitrita Devi and son Subhayu Dasgupta are also noted writers.
Dasgupta completed doctorate in Indian Philosophy in 1920. Later he went to Cambridge University as a research student. He studied European philosophy during this time. He published the first volume of the History of Indian Philosophy in 1921 while his stay in Cambridge. He also worked as a lecturer in Cambridge for a while. Dasgupta later participated in many debates globally and continued with his publishing works. After returning to India, he taught at Rajshahi College and Chittagong College before joining Presidency College as Professor of Philosophy. Later too he continued his career as a professor of philosophy.
