Surekha Biography

Surekha is a Malayalam actress, who shot to fame after doing lead role in award winning movie, Thakara directed by Bharathan in 1979. This movie was a sensational hit and ran in full-packed houses. She was casted opposite Prathap K. Pothan. She is remembered for the melodious song pictured on her, ‘Mauname nirayum mauname’ sung by S. Janaki. But she got similar roles only later and she moved away from the film industry. Novemberinte Nashtam (1982), Angadi (1980), Aarohanam (1980), Njan Ekananu (1982), Ee Nadu (1982), John Jaffer Janardhanan (1982), Aattuvanchi Ulanjappol (1984), Vannu Kandu Keezhadakki (1985), Katturumbinum Kaathukuthu (1986) and Thadaakam (1982) are a few movies to mention. After a long break from the industry, she returned with 2012 Mohanlal movie – Masters, in a supporting role.

Surekha hails from Andhra Pradesh. Telugu film 'Karunamayidu' directed by 'Bhim Singh' was her debut movie and she acted in this movie while at school. She played the role of Mother Mary in this movie, after attending a screen test. Thakara was her second movie. She was new to the industry and her role demanded exposure. The film shooting was done at Veli, Thiruvananthapuram. Though she got quick attention through this movie, this single role affected her career negatively. Later she was offered only glamorous roles and thus she took a break from the industry.

After she quit from the film world, she started business and at presently successfully running two or three firms. She got married to Dr. Sreenivas in 1995 and a girl was born to them. However the couple parted in good ways. She has acted in one Tamil movie also – Ellam Impamayam.
