Supriya Sule Biography

Supriya Sule is an Indian politician from Nationalist Congress Party. At present she is a member of parliament who won in 2009 from Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. She is the daughter of the President of the Nationalist Congress Party, Sharad Pawar. She was an MP representing Maharashtra in the Rajya Sabha. In 2011, she launched a statewide campaign against female foeticide which included processions, college events and competitions.

 

Supriya was born in Pune on 30 June 1969 as the daughter of famous congress leader, Sharat Pawar and Pratibha Sharadchandra Pawar. She completed schooling from St. Columba School, Pune and took degree from Jai Hind College in Mumbai. She took a BSc degree in Microbiology. She married Sadanand Bhalchandra Sule on 4 March 1992 and the couple has two kids. After marriage, she spent some time at California, Indonesia and Singapore and then returned to Mumbai. In 2006 she was elected to the Rajya Sabha. In 2011, her statewide campaign against female foeticide was well noticed.

 

In 2012, "Rashtravadi Yuvati Congress" was formed under her leadership to give platform to young girls in politics. Apart from female foeticide and organizing young girls in active politics, her other works include women empowerment and opposition of dowry system. In April 2010, irregularities in franchisees of Indian Premier League of 20-20 cricket matches were surfaced and Pawar familytoo faced certain allegations related to membership in IPL teams. Sule denied allegations of financial links between her family and IPL. However, there were reports that her husband owned 10% of a firm that had exclusive multi-year broadcasting rights of IPL matches. In June 2010, Economic Times reported that Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule owned 16.22 percent of a firm that had bid for the Pune Warriors.
