Supriya Pathak Biography

 

Supriya Pathak is an actress of silver screen of Bollywood who worked for off-beat movies during 1980’s. Now she is a busy serial actress and her serials like Khichdi and Idhar Udhar made her a popular name among television audience. As an actress she has worked along with many talented actors of parallel cinema like Naseeruddin Shah, Farokh Sheik and Smita Patel. Surpriya Pathak is the wife of talented actor Pankaj Kapur and Shahid Kapoor is her step son. Her sister actress Ratna Pathak is married to Naseeruddin Shah. Supriya Pathak is the wife of character artist of 70’s and 80’s, popular for mother and grandmother roles – Dina Pathak. She has won many awards as a comedy artist for television serials.  

 

Supriya started her career with the movie, ‘Kalyug’ in the year 1981. She got similar characters again and she did remarkable performance in movies like Baazar and Mirch Masala, as supporting actress next to Smita patel. Her other memorable movies during this period include Masoom, Vijeta and Oscar winning movie, Gandhi. In 1988 she did a French movie - The Bengali Night alongside Hugh Grant.  Her other movies during 80’s include Shehanshah, dharma aur kanoon, Daata, Falak, Dilwala, Kamla ki maut, Aakansha, Behu ki awaaz, Awaaz, Bekaraar, Jhootti and Arjun. In 1989, it was Supriya Pathak who played the leading actress role in Aamir Khan’s movie ‘Raakh’.  She played his co-actress role, who is senior to him. Though the movie received two national awards, it couldn’t win audience’s heart and was declared flop at box office. This movie is also significant as her husband Pankaj Kapur also worked in this movie.

 

During early 90’s she took a break from the industry doing just a couple of movies – Shadyantra in 1990 and Madhosh in 1994. She took interest in doing television serials and returned to movies in middle 2000’s. Movies during her come back include - Khichdi: The Movie, Wake up Sid, Sarkar, Shangai, Mausam and Bewaffa. During her second phase, she has been nominated in Filmfare for supporting actress role for the movies Khichdi: The Movie and Wake up Sid, though she couldn’t win it. Her role as Ranbir Kapoor’s mother in Wake Up Sid is really remarkable. During 80’s she has won Filmfare supporting actress awards twice – Baazar and Kalyug, perhaps the best movies of her film career till now.
