Suman Mukhopadhyay Biography

Suman Mukhopadhyay is a film director and play director from Bengal. He has been associated with Bengali art most. He has also done a few European plays. Raja Lear, Bisarjan, Teesta Paarer Brittanto and Samay Asamayer Brittanto are his most noted theater works and most of them have been regarded as masterpieces. He is one of the top rated directors of contemporary Indian drama. His films have been shown at many international film festivals and have won national awards at best regional film category also. Most recently in 2013, his Bengali film Kangal Malsat made news, with the Central Board of Film Certification refusing to clear it against fears of social unrest.

Suman was born on November 20, 1966 in Howrah, West Bengal. Apart from his adapted works like Raja Lear, Bisarjan, Teesta Paarer Brittanto and Samay Asamayer Brittanto, has also staged Rabindranath Tagore's Raktakarabi and a few more works. Coriolanus and The Little Clay Cart are a few such works. He also owns experience at international level by directing The Man of the Heart at the University of California, Berkeley and Girish Karnad's Nagamandala at the Department of Theatre, Kalamazoo College, Michigan. In 2007 he directed Fireface, in association with the Goethe-Institute.

He debut film direction with 2006 movie, Herbert which won National awards for best Bengali cinema. This movie was based on a novel by Nabarun Bhattacharya. Chaturanga (2008), Mahanagar@Kolkata (2009) and Kangal Malsat (2013) are his released movies. Shesher Kobita and Prince of Metiabruz are his upcoming projects. Shesher Kobita stars Konkona Sen Sharma and Rahul Bose in leading roles, the actors known for their chemistry in Mr and Mrs Iyyer. He has received numerous awards including Most Promising Director (BFJA), Best Debut Director (Lankesh Award) and Audience Award in the Dhaka International Film Festival.
