Suman Kalyanpur Biography

Suman Kalyanpur is one among those gifted talents who faded away with the contestants in the singing field. She entered Bollywood at a time when the sisters – Lata and Asha were reigning the Bollywood. Her voice closely resembles Great Lata Mangeshkar and that may be the reason why she got fewer chances comparing the other two. Yet she completed more than 700 songs including non-film albums.

She was born in Dhaka of British India in 1937. Later the family moved to Mumbai to pursue singing career. She debut Bollywood through a duet in 1954 hit movie Darwaza along with Talat Mehmood. Her next hit song was Koi Pukare of Manju two years later. During 60’s and 70’s, she sang a few hit songs for the great movies of the era. Brahmachari, Dil Ek Mandir, Pakeezah, Jaha Ara and Dil hi toh hai are included in that list.

When Shankar Jaikishen gave a wonderful song of Brahmachari against Mohd.Rafi, it gave birth to a great dancing number. For the song Aaj kal tere mere pyar ke charche mein, Mumtaz danced along with Shammi kapoor and the song was beautifully choreographed. Tum ne pukara – another Shammi kapoor Shankar Jaikishen combination of movie Raj Kumar is a memorable song of Suman Kalyanpur. It’s very difficult to distinguish between voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Suman Kalyanpur. Yet it was a bit unfortunate that Suman Kalyanpur was not able to add too many hit songs in her career, though having a classical base for singing.

She has sung duets with almost all singers of that time. Hemant Kumar, Talat Mehmood, Mohd Rafi, Mukesh and Manna Dey can be included in that group.  ‘Dil ne phir yaad kiya’ and ‘Parbaton ke pedom par’ can be included in the hit combination of Mohd.Rafi – Suman kalyanpur. She has worked with almost all music directors of that time including Naushad, Shankar Jaikishen, Chitragupth, S.D.Burman, Madan Mohan and Lakshmikanth Pyarelal. Apart from Hindi, she has rendered her voice for Bengali, Marathi, Kannada, Bhojpuri and few more Indian languages. Her hit songs are only a few. Yet she is remembered most for her resembling voice and singing style of Lata Mangeshkar.
