Sulochana Biography

Ruby Myers, known as Sulochana in Indian screen was one of the earliest Indian actresses. She was given Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 1973 for her unparallel contributions to Indian cinema. She was a silent era actress of Jewish ancestry, hailing from the community of Baghdadi Jews in India. She was one of the highest paid actresses of her time and the owner of Rubi Pics, a film production house. Ruby Myers is the real name of this actress while Sulochana was self named screen name. She was born in Pune, Maharastra. She is one of those rarest actresses on whom a movie has made with actress’s name. The movie Sulochana was released in the year 1933.

Ruby was working as a telephone operator when she was approached by Mohan Bhavnani of Kohinoor Film Company to work in films. Though she was excited with the offer, the conservative society of India during early 1900’s didn’t support women enter theatre or movies. So she didn’t accept the offer. Bhavnani persisted with his offer and she finally agreed. Though she didn’t have any previous experience, her association with Kohinoor Film Company made her a popular star of silent films. Typist Girl (1926), Balidaan (1927), Wildcat of Bombay (1927), Madhuri (1928), Anarkali (1928) and Indira B.A. (1929) are her successful movies in the earliest phase of her career. A popular dance of Sulochana from Madhuri was added in the short film on Mahatma Gandhi inaugurating a khadi exhibition. She was at the peak of success during this time.

When silent era paved way to new generation cinema of sound and music, she had to take classes to learn Hindustani for one year.  She came back with a bang and many of her movies were released again with sound effects. Indira M.A. (1934), Anarkali (1935) and Bombay ki Billi (1936) were among those movies. Her salary that time was 5000 rupees per month and she owned almost all luxurious cars that time. Later her career deteriorated with the rise of young actresses. In 1953, she acted in her third Anarkali, as Salim’s mother.  She finally died lonely and forgotten in 1983 in her flat in Mumbai, a sad end to one of the most popular celebrities of Bollywood who led a luxurious life in her young age.
