Sulaiman Nadvi Biography

Sayyed Sulaiman Nadvi was an eminent Islam scholar from India. He was a writer and historian also. Khutbat-e-Madras is his noted work and he has also co-authored Sirat-un-Nabi. After Indian partition, he moved to Karachi in 1950 where he got settled. He died 3 years later on his birthday. Other noted works are Ardh al-Quran, Rahmat-e-Aalam, Durus-ul-Adab, Seir-e-Afghanistan, Seerat-e-Aisha, Barid Farang, Ahl-us-Sunnah-wal-Jamaah, Yad-e-Raftagan, Naqush-e-Sulaiman, Khayyam, Maqalat-e-Sulaiman and Hayat Imam Malik.  

 

Nadvi was born on November 22, 1884 in the Desna village of Patna as the son of a sufi singer, Hakeem Sayyed Abul Hasan. He was a physician at Islampur also. His primary lessons were taught by Khalifa Anwar Ali of Desna and Maqsood Ali of Ookhdi followed by his elder brother, Hakeem Sayyed Abu Habeeb and his father. In 1989 he moved to Bihar and became a disciple of Maulana Mohiuddin and Sulaiman Phulwari. Later he studied from Madrasa-e-Imdadia, Darbhanga. He joined Darul-uloom Nadwatul Ulama at Lucknow in 1901 where he studied for seven years. After that he became the sub-editor of the journal, An-Nadwa. His first published article was Waqt in Urdu language in the monthly Urdu Journal Makhzan. After completion of graduation from Nadva in 1906, he was appointed as an instructor of Modern Arabic and Dogmatic Theology at Dar-ul-Uloom Nadva.

 

After Shibli Nomani’s death in 1914, Nadvi left his position as a professor at Deccan College, Pune and traveled to Azamgarh. Many of Shibli’s works were unfinished including Sirat-un-Nabi. The incomplete work was later edited and published by Nomani. He edited 2 volumes of the work and completed the remaining four volumes himself. He received funds from Sultan Jehan Begum of Bhopal and Nizam of Hyderabad for the completion of work. His lectures on the life Muhammad were collectively published as Khutbat-e-Madras. Khayyam is another outstanding work.
