Sudhindranath Dutta Biography

Sudhindranath Dutta was a noted writer from Bengal belonging to post-modern era and one of the prominent names of Bengali literature after Tagore.  He was also a journalist, critic and essayist and worked with multiple publications. Tanvi (1930), Orchestra (1935), Krandashee (1937), Uttar Falgunee (1940), Sangbarto (1953), Pratiddhani (1954) and Dashamee (1956) are his noted poetry collections. Svagato (1938) and Kuaye O Kaalpurush (1957) are his famous essays.

Dutta was born on 30th October 1901 in Varanasi in a financially sound family. His father was a lawyer. He studied at Theosophical High School in Varanasi and Oriental Seminary in Kolkata, before pursuing graduation from Scottish Church College. He also studied law in parallel to his post-graduation studies and couldn’t complete both. He married Chhabi Basu in 1924. He was drawn towards philosophy at a younger age and started ‘Parichay’, a literary magazine in 1931 through which he published his philosophic works. The magazine shut down in 1943. Later he worked as a journalist and editor with many prominent magazines of his time, which include - The Forward, Sabujpatra and The Statesman.

He worked as a part-time lecturer and also worked with many private sector firms. Those private firms include - Light of Asia Insurance Company, ARP, DVC and Institute of Public Opinion. He worked in private sector firms from 1930 to 1956 before returning back to his teaching profession. He went for a foreign trip as a part of his autobiographical work, after accepting a job at University of Chicago. However he returned back to India and joined Jadavpur University. He continued there till his death in 1960.
