Sudhi Ranjan Das Biography 
Sudhi Ranjan Das was the 5th Chief Justice of India. He served during the period December 1, 1955 to January 30, 1959. Das has also served as Chairman of ‘The Statesman’. Born in a prominent Das family of Telirbagh to Rakhal Chandra Das and Binodini Das, he studied at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, he was one of the first four pupils of Rabindranath Tagore. A few of his cousins are noted Bengali figures like – Chittaranjan Das, Satish Ranjan Das, Sarala Roy and Lady Abala Bose. His family owned many lawyers of whom Chittaranjan Das and Satish Ranjan Das are leading names.
Sudhi was born on 1 October 1894 in Telirbagh, a part of Bangladesh right now. His schooling was done at Viswabharathi. He completed his intermediate at the Scottish Church College and graduation from Bangabasi College. Later he proceeded to read law at University College London where he graduated with first class honours in 1918. Sudhi Ranjan Das was married to Swapna Majumdar and their kids were named none other than Tagore. Both his sons died at younger age in different accidents. Sudhi Ranjan Das was survived by his daughter Anjana, her husband Ashoke Kumar Sen, and seven grandchildren including the kids of his sons. Siddhartha Shankar Ray, the former Chief Minister of West Bengal is his grandson.
S.R. Das joined the Calcutta Bar in 1919 and has also worked as a lecturer at University Law College. He was appointed a Judge of the Calcutta High Court in 1942 and later Judge of the Federal Court of India on January 20, 1950. He was one among the first batch of Judges of the Supreme Court of India and has served as Chief Justice of Supreme Court from 1956-1959. He is also known for his social activities like association with Brahma Samaj Movement.
