Sudha Shivpuri Biography

Sudha Shivpuri is a noted television actress, known for portraying the role of 'Baa' in the longest running Indian TV serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi (2000–2008), aired on Star Plus. She is the wife of noted Bollywood actor, Om Shivpuri known for portraying negative and character roles. He was the first chief of NDS, New Delhi. Their daughter Ritu Shivpuri is also a television actress and worked in a few movies. Sudha is a graduate from National School of Drama, Delhi.

Sudha was born on July 14, 1937 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. She was brought up in Rajasthan. She started her acting career while at school at the age of 13. She lost her father at a young age and her mother was ill. To earn a livelihood, she entered to the world of acting. She met her future husband Om Shivpuri while working at Jaipur Radio station. Later they worked together in many stage plays as well. Later, both were classmates at NSD. They fell in love during this time and later got married after a courtship of 9 years. Before that, they had already formed a drama company – Dishandar together. Aadhe Adhure is one of the most popular plays of this drama group, followed by Tughlaq and Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai. She played lead role in Khamosh! Adalat Jari Hai. All these popular stage plays were directed by her husband. After marriage, they continued work in Delhi theatre.

When Om started his film career in 1971, Sudha too shifted to Mumbai. She made her film debut with Basu Chatterjee's Swami in 1977. Insaaf Ka Tarazu, Hamari Bahu Alka, Sawan Ko Aane Do, Sun Meri Laila, Burning Train, Vidhaata and Maya Memsaab are her noted movies. During 1990’s she entered television with serials - Aa Bail Mujhe Maar and Rajni, followed by Missing, Rishtey, Sheeshe Ka Ghar, Waqt Ka Dariya, Daman, Santoshi Ma, Yeh Ghar, Kasamh Se, Kis Desh Mein Hai Meraa Dil and Bandhan. She also appeared in Bollywood movie – Pinjar.
