Subrata K. Mitra Biography

Subrata K. Mitra is Professor of Political Science who has authored several books and articles. Currently he serves as a Professor of Political Science of South Asia at the Faculty of Economic and Social Sciences of the University of Heidelberg. Power, Protest and Participation: Local Elites and Development in India (1992), Democracy and Social Change in India: A Cross-sectional Analysis of the Indian Electorate (Co-author - 1999), Culture and Rationality: The Politics of Social Change in Post-colonial India (1999), Political Sociology - The State of the Art (2010), Politics in India: Structure, Process and Policy (2011) and Political Parties in South Asia (2004) are his noted published works.

 

Mitra was born on June 16, 1949. He completed graduation in political science from Utkal University in Orissa. Then he completed MA in political science in 1971 from the University of Delhi. He submitted the thesis, "The Role of the Bharatiya Kranti Dal in the Politics of Uttar Pradesh, 1967-1970" as a part of his academic studies. He also completed M.Phil degree in Political Development from Jawaharlal Nehru University. Then he studied at University of Rochester in Rochester, New York and received his doctorate in political science in 1976 based on his dissertation on "Ideological Structure, Strategy and Cabinet Stability: a theoretical and empirical exploration".

 

Later he served as faculty in many international universities. He also published and edited many books and published many articles on the subject. Democratization in South Asia, the interaction of traditional values and modern institutions and the role of identity and religion in Indian politics are the common subjects he deals with. He has served in the editorial boards of many publications like International Political Science Review, India Review, International Journal of Hindu Studies and Journal of Commonwealth and Comparative Politics.
