Subhashini Ali Biography

Subhashini Ali is an Indian politician and veteran leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist). She is an actress and costume designer too. She has served as a parliamentarian who got elected in 1989 Lok Sabha elections from Kanpur. However she was defeated in 1996 and 2004 general elections. She is a candidate from Barrackpore, West Bengal for 2014 Lok Sabha elections representing Communist Party. Currently she serves as the President of the All India Democratic Women's Association. She is currently a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). She was inducted to the polit bureau (PB) of Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 2015 thereby becoming the second women member in PB after Brinda Karat. Subhashini is not the stereotypical Indian woman. She is a hardcore feminist who condemns on beauty pageants and strives for the betterment of women. She is an atheist.

 

Subhashini Ali is the daughter of Colonel Prem Sehgal and Captain Lakshmi Sehgal, famous social worker and freedom fighter. She graduated from Wellham School. She was married to noted artist and film maker of Umrao Jaan fame, Muzaffar Ali. Noted film director Shaad Ali of Saathiya and Bunty aur Bubly fame is their only son. However the couple got separated and Muzaffar Ali remarried actress Mira, with whom he worked with. Subhashini has been associated with entertainment industry as well. She was the costume designer of Umrao Jaan, the movie directed by her former husband. She has also appeared in a few movies like Asoka (2001), The Guru (2002) and Amu (2005). She played Shah Rukh Khan’s mother in Asoka.

 

She now lives in Kanpur. As a trade Unionist and leader of the All India Democratic Women’s Association, she was once very influential in the politics of Kanpur. She got elected to Lok Sabha in 1991 representing the same constituency. However she was not able to repeat her successful history.
