Subhash Kapoor Biography

Subhash Kapoor is an established director of Bollywood known for satire comical dramas. He is best known for the satire comedies - Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010) and the National award winning Jolly LLB (2013). Say Salaam India (2007) and Guddu Rangeela (2015) are other released movies and he has announced his next project - Munnabhai Chale Delhi. Jolly LLB won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for the year 2013, apart from Filmfare and Screen awards.

Subhash Kapoor was born in Delhi. He completed MA degree in Hindi literature and started his career as a political journalist in Delhi in the 1990s. In 2001 he made his first short film which received critical acclaim and since then he is associated with entertainment industry. He started making commercial short films, documentaries and ad films. He shifted to Mumbai in 2006. His first movie as an independent director was a sports film on cricket - Say Salaam India. The movie went unnoticed.

He took a break from the industry and returned back in 2010. This time he experimented with satire comedy and got success. Phas Gaye Re Obama, which included an ensemble star cast - Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia, Manu Rishi, Sanjai Mishra and Amol Gupte received moderate success at box office. The movie mostly garnered positive reviews for its new theme in a humour way. Rajat Kapoor played the lead role of an NRI businessman who has faced huge losses due to recession, but got kidnapped once he reached India.

He followed the same track and his next movie, Jolly LLB was also noticed for its new theme and satire way of handling the story. The movie cemented Arshad Warsi as a lead actor and the star cast also included Amrita Rao and Boman Irani. A courtroom drama with a comical touch, the movie was well received by audience. In 2014, a small time actress Geetika Tyagi accused director Subhash Kapoor of molesting her and she uploaded a video on you tube, the director being slapped by her. Later she clarified that it was not a case of casting couch.
