Subhas Chandra Bose Biography

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was born on 23rd January 1897 in a town of Orissa known as Cuttack. He died a mysterious death on the 18th of August 1945. Many committees have been set up by the government of India to investigate the turnaround of events that lead to his death. He was called Netaji which meant senior leader, in Hindi.  He did his B.A. from Scottish Church College under Calcutta University.

Netaji always was the face of the independence movement; he advocated complete unconditional independence, where as congress the major political force fighting for independence wanted it in parts and phases through dominion status. Just then Bhagat Singh died the death of a martyr and this infuriated him further to take up violence. After being elected congress chief twice he had to resign due to the same difference in ideologies between him and senior leader Mohandas Gandhi.

After a brief stint in jail he was released in 1927 he became the general secretary for the congress and worked with Jawahar Lal Nehru for independence. He believed in complete Swaraj which meant self independence and to achieve the same force had to be put on the British. This again created a rift in the congress party and he was advised to form his own cabinet. He believed that the British were weak after the Second World War and so by pressure they will give up the country and that needed to be done than just wait for them to grant independence.

When the world war started he advocated a campaign of mass civil disobedience to protest against a British officer namely, ‘Lord Linlithgow’ who was the viceroy then and had decided to declare war on India’s behalf. ‘Holwell Monument’ was demolished during the protests in Calcutta and he was again thrown in jail, but had to be released after protesters staged a seven day hunger strike for his release.

Netaji is alleged to have died in a plane crash in Taiwan while going to Tokyo. But the lack of evidence and body has led to many theories like the one by the inquiry committee under Justice Mukherjee that gathered evidence saying there was no plane crash in Taiwan on the alleged date of his death.
