Sri Aurobindo Biography

Sri Aurobindo was an Indian nationalist, freedom fighter, poet, philosopher and saint. He was one of its influential leaders during freedom struggle movement and then turned into a spiritual reformer giving his vision as a spiritual person. He was an authentic representative of the Indian spiritual tradition and has disciples following his principles worldwide. Several institutions have been named after him. Sri Aurobindo International Centre of Education, an integral part of the Ashram and Sri Aurobindo Centre for Advanced Research, located in Pondicherry need special mention.

 

Aurobindo Ghose was born in Kolkata on 15 August 1872. His father, Krishna Dhan Ghosh was District Surgeon of Rangapur. At the age of 5, he along with his siblings was sent to Loreto Convent School in Darjeeling for school studies. In 1879, Sri Aurobindo and his two elder brothers were taken to Manchester for education. He learnt Latin, Greek, German and Italian also during this period. K.D. Ghosh wanted his sons to pass the prestigious Indian Civil Service examination which was fulfilled by young Aurobindo. As a part of ICS studied, he learnt English from King's College, Cambridge. He joined the services in 1893 at Baroda. During this time, he contributed many articles to Indu prakash and as the chairman of the Baroda college board. He published his first book of poetry - The Rishi.

 

He was active in politics and freedom struggle movement and hold good relations with Lokmanya Tilak and Sister Nivedita. He repeatedly travelled Bengal during this time and formally shifted to Kolkata in 1906. During his stay in Pondicherry, Sri Aurobindo evolved a new method of spiritual practice, which he called Integral Yoga through which he gave an opinion that evolution of human life into a life divine. In 1926, with the help of his spiritual collaborator, Mirra Alfassa, he founded the Sri Aurobindo Ashram. He published The Life Divine thus becoming the first Indian to create a major literary corpus in English.
