Sourav Ganguly Biography

Sourav Ganguly is an Indian cricketer who played for India formerly and the ex-captain of the Indian National Team. He was born in an affluent family and his elder brother Snehasish introduced him to cricket. He started to play cricket when he was still in his school. He holds the record of the 5th highest run scorer in the ODI cricket and 5th person to cross 10,000 runs.

 

His performance in Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy gave him an opening in the international cricket. In his debut ODI with England, he scored 131 runs. In the partnership with Rahul Dravid he could score 318 runs in the 1999 Cricket World Cup and this is the highest overall partnership score in the history of World Cup matches.

 

Sourav Ganguly was born on 8th July 1972 in Kolkata (Calcutta). His father is Chandidas one of the richest men in the city and mother is Nirupa Ganguly. He was affectionately called as Maharaja in his childhood days. Initially he was attracted towards football. His mother did not like him playing cricket. But his brother supported him and sent him to the coaching camp when he was studying tenth grade.

 

As he performed well in Ranji season, he was included in the ODI against West Indies in 1992. He was criticized for being tough and arrogant and removed from the team. In his Test debut he was able to score a century. He made 136 runs in the second innings. In the Independence Cup at Dhaka in 1998, he won the Man of the Match award. After the match fixing scandals in 2000, he was appointed as the captain of the Indian cricket team. His captaincy led to the deterioration of his individual performance and he was dropped from the team in October 2005 though he came back again. The captaincy was passed to Dravid.

 

He eloped with his childhood sweetheart Dona Roy. Both the families were enemies at that time and later reconciled and the marriage was held in February 1997. He was awarded Padma Shri in the year 2004, by the then President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalaam.
