Sooni is a Parsi Zoroastrian Indian born in the year 1957. She was born and brought up in Mumbai. Her schooling was completed at Queen Mary School, Mumbai. She completed her graduation from Harvard University, US in the year 1980. Then she studied a filmmaking course under Alfred Guzzetti. It was during this time when she met Mira Nair who was an undergraduate then. Thus began the wonderful collaboration of these two Indian ladies at abroad which resulted in a few movies, for which Indians feel proud always.

After completing filmmaking course under Alfred Guzzetti, she joined the Cinema Studies Department at New York University where she took MA in Film Theory and Criticism, in 1981. Then she returned to India to start her career as a freelance photographer. It was photographer Raghubir Singh who suggested her to include photos of her Parsi community as well as extend her work. Her photographs were exhibited in India, US, France and Britain. But destiny was something else and she collaborated with Mira to give Salaam Bombay and Mississippi Masala. Quite co-incidence, the final drafts of both these films were written in Brooklyn, New York. Her work My Own Country was based on the book by Abraham Verghese.
