Soni Razdan Biography

Soni Razdan is a British-born Indian actress and film director. She is married to noted filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt. Noted film actress of ‘The Highway’ and ‘The student of the year’ fame Alia Bhatt is the daughter of this couple. Actress Pooja Bhatt is her step-daughter. In the 1980’s, she started appearing in many Bollywood movies and with 2005 movie Nazar, she made her directorial debut the movie was a big flop. The movie starred Pakistani actress, Meera and Ashmit Patel. She also appeared in the popular serial of 1986, Buniyaad, for Doordarshan. Since then she regularly appears for Doordarshan serials and Saahil, Gaatha & Papa Kehte Hain are a few among her early works. Later she worked with other television channels as well, as an actress and director.

She was born in Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1962. Her father, N. Razdan is a Kashmiri Pandit. She started her career as a theater artist. John Fowler's English play ‘The Collector’ marked her beginning as a stage artist. Her Hindi theater career started with Satyadev Dubey’s theater production. Shyam Benegal’s Mandi in 1983 was her first noted appearance in a Hindi movie. She played the supporting role of Nadira in this highly acclaimed movie of Benegal. Saaransh was the first movie in which she worked with Mahesh Bhatt. Mahesh Bhatt was already divorced and he converted to Islam to marry Soni Razdan. The couple had two children, Alia Bhatt & Shaheen Bhatt.

She has appeared in supporting roles in movies like Love breakups Zindagi, Patiala House, Jaan-E-Mann, Monsoon wedding, Page 3, Daddy etc and she most recently appeared in Shootout at Wadala. Now she is planning to direct her second movie after a long break of 10 years, with her daughter Alia Bhatt playing the lead role.
